Telehandler's are unique in that their advantage is also their biggest drawback: since the boom extends or raises when the machine is bearing a load, it also acts as a lever and causes the vehicle to become quite unstable, even with the counterweights on the rear. This translates to the lifting capacity decreasing quickly as the working radius increases. The working radius is the distance between the center of the load and the front of the wheels.
When it is fully extended with a low boom angle for instance, the telehandler would only have a 400 pound weight capacity, whilst a retracted boom could support weights up to five thousand pounds. The same unit with a 5000 lb. lift capacity that has the boom retracted may be able to easily support as much as 10,000 pounds with the boom raised up to 70.
England first pioneered the telehandler within Horley, Surrey. The Matbro Company developed these equipment from their articulated cross country forestry forklifts. At first, they had a centrally mounted boom design on the front portion. This placed the cab of the driver on the equipment's back part, like in the Teleram 40 unit. The rigid chassis design with a rear mounted boom and the cab situated on the side has ever since become more and more famous.
At the center of the 5 steps and this regulation, there is a machine which stands on a triangular footprint and lifts heavy weights to impressive heights. The main objective is to maintain the telehandler upright, but of course there are dangers.
The triangular base of the telehandler comprises the rear-axle pivot point and the two front wheels. The rear axles normally oscillates, hence the back wheels are not considered part of the base. The telehandler remains upright as long as the center of gravity of the machine, that is defined as the point in 3 dimensions around which the weight of the equipment is balanced, stays oriented in the stability triangle.
When doing maintenance, some of the main components you would have to pay attention to comprise the horn, safety warning devices, the lights, the gauges and the overhead guard. Any burnt out light bulbs or faulty parts must be replaced as soon as they are noticed. It is also vital to inspect the wiring.
After the above components have been inspected carefully, proceed to the battery compartment to be able to see if the terminals are clean. If the terminals are not clean, be sure to clean them properly. Each and every battery cell must be inspected in order to ensure the fill level is topped up to the regulated amount.
